The McCrae House, located in Guelph, Ontario, is a historic site that commemorates the life and legacy of John McCrae, the author of the iconic World War I poem, “In Flanders Fields.” The house was built in 1858 and was purchased by McCrae’s grandparents in 1870. John McCrae was born in the house in 1872 and spent much of his childhood there.

Today, the McCrae House is a museum that showcases the life and accomplishments of John McCrae. Visitors can explore the house and its many artifacts, including McCrae’s personal possessions, family photos, and original manuscripts of his poetry. The museum also features interactive exhibits and multimedia displays that provide a deeper understanding of McCrae’s life and work.

One of the highlights of a visit to the McCrae House is the opportunity to see the room where John McCrae wrote: “In Flanders Fields.” The poem was written in May 1915, after McCrae witnessed the death of his close friend in battle. The room has been restored to its original appearance, and visitors can see the desk and chair where McCrae penned the famous lines that would become one of the most beloved and enduring war poems of all time.

The McCrae House is not just a place to learn about the life and work of John McCrae; it is also a symbol of Canadian heritage and a tribute to the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers during World War I.
